Being a gamer and a fan of technology, I recently had the privilege of testing Samsung's most recent QD-OLED 34' gaming display and it was nothing less than phenomenal. Here is a comprehensive review from my side where I have discussed several aspects in detail:
Design and Build Quality: 9/10
From the very first sight when you take it out of the box, you appreciate the design that Samsung pays so much attention to. The modern looking 34 inches ultra-wide curved display is all premium with its thin bezels and beauties. The monitor is well built with solid stand which allows tilting, swiveling and height adjustment. For gamers that require ambient lighting, the back of the monitor lights up with RGB lights which is simply perfect.
Display Quality: 10/10
QD-OLED (Quantum Dot OLED) is indeed the most promising technology that has QD-OLED technology. Offering a resolution of 3440 x 1440 (UWQHD) and supporting HDR10, the colors are bright, the darks are extremely dark and the contrast in general is the best. Titles such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Zero Dawn felt like an experience in the cinema, with colors so vivid that no ordinary LED screen could reproduce.
With the futuristic technology comes a 175Hz refresh rate coupled with a 0.03ms response time enabling fast motion without any lag. Thus making games like Valorant and Call of Duty: Warzone, very fun to play. It also comes with FreeSync Premium Pro and G-Sync technology meaning there will not be any screen tearing or stuttering even when playing at a high frame rate.
Performance: 9.5/10
This monitor is great for competitive gaming scenarios. The combination of the high refresh rate and the impressive low latency gives a responsive experience, which at times can be crucial for players. It’s also very simple switch the game modes and the Game Bar that comes pre-installed allows one to alter the settings without necessarily leaving the game.
Content creators and professionals will appreciate that the QD-OLED is able to achieve 99.3% DCI-P3 thanks to its color accuracy, thus making it worth using for any photo or video editing work.
Connectivity: 8.5/10
The monitor includes density of ports like HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 and USB-C. But in addition to this, another HDMI 2.1 port would have been beneficial for those with several high-end gadgets. The USB hub is useful in connecting other devices but the position of the ports can be friendlier.
Heat and Power Efficiency: 8/10
OLED panels are known for heating issues, but it looks like Samsung has effectively dealt with this. The downside is that while using the monitor for long periods of time, it does get warm, if not too warm. Power efficiency is fair but QD-OLED still does utilize power beyond that of regular monitors.
Pros:
Amazing QD-OLED display with superior color reproduction.
175Hz refresh rate with ultra-low response time.
Ultrawide design complements gaming as much as it does productivity.
Great HDR performance with deep darks and bright highlights.
Nice chassis with a height adjustable stand and RGB lightings.
Disadvantages:
Costs that are higher than average may put off some economical buyers.
Number of HDMI 2.1 ports is limited.
Slight warm-up during prolonged gaming.
Potential risk of OLED burn-in with static images.
Final Verdict: 9/10
One of the best gaming monitors has to be Samsung's 34" QD-OLED display which proves to be specifically engineered for high performing gamers who do not compromise with quality. The unique tech and great features make it a great tool for anyone hoping to enhance their gaming experience. Look past the steep cost and the little issue of heat, and this monitor quite literally redefines the ultrawide gaming monitors category.
