As someone who enjoys using different social media platforms, I recently discovered a decentralized social application called Bluesky, which seeks to change how we interact online for the better. Here’s what I think about it from the little experience I have.
Value Proposition
Bluesky is inherently a social app that embraces the world of decentralization. In other words, it does not depend on a country, an individual, or even a company to host and control the user generated interactions and the data. In fact, it uses a protocol called the AT Protocol that seems to be aimed at a social media system that is far more open and focused on the user. This is actually a very captivating idea, especially with the current issues of privacy, ownership of data and excessive control by rich technological industries.
Advantages
Decentralization: The biggest draw for me is the decentralized nature of Bluesky. This simply means that the user’s information is not kept in a central server owned by one organization, therefore the chances of leakage of information and abuse of it are minimal. Added to that is the realization that users are now more encouraged than ever to manage their own data and how it is used.
User Control: Users of the Bluesky platform are free to choose what servers they want to join hence creating a feeling of community and belonging. This is an interesting feature because it empowers me to join a system that suits my beliefs and interests.
Content Moderation: This development could also mean the risks that are commonly associated with content censorship will also be different. For instance, users can have their own styles of moderation that each user advocates thus promoting healthy discussions. It is encouraging that I get to help design and implement how the community operates.
Simplicity and Clean Design: The application is properly designed and has an interface that all users would find smooth to operate with. I like the simple graphic designs which are pleasing to the eye without the excessive bombardment of advertisements and irrelevant services.
Disadvantages
In Progress: At this point, Bluesky is still under development. It is promising nonetheless, there are a few bugs and stability issues. I experienced some bugs when trying to post and navigate the site which is disappointing but expected of a new site.
Few Numbers of Users: Owing to the fact that Bluesky is still new, the user numbers are still increasing. Hence, the range of content and scope of conversation is to a degree narrow as compared to the already established platforms. I was not able to meet quite a number of people as I would have wished, though I believe this will change with more people signing up.
Adjusting Period: Those who are used to old social media may need time to grasp what a decentralized application is and how it functions. Some elements and features are rather technical and therefore might put off some users due to their technological ineptness.
Conclusion
To sum up, Bluesky could reimagine the way how social network services are done due to their focus on the user and putting power away from the center. This approach has its drawbacks yes, but it is still inescapably pregnant with the possibilities of a more seamless and user-friendly organic social network.
Should you wish for privacy, want control over your data, and are looking to join the emerging communities promoting new options over social media, I suggest you try using Bluesky. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the rough rides ahead as the platform grows!
